## Auction is not only used - completely new products are sold too - Blog

Many people think everything sold at auction is used. In reality, completely new, unused products are also sold, such as surplus stock, returns and samples.

A common misconception is that everything sold at auction is used and worn. That is not true. At Budi, we regularly sell completely new, unused products. This may be surplus stock, e-commerce returns that have never been used, samples from fairs or products from closed stores that never had time to sell.

## Where do the new products come from?

There are several reasons why unused products end up at auction:

### Surplus and stock clearance

Companies that import, manufacture or distribute goods sometimes have stock left over. It can be products ordered in too large quantities, seasonal items that did not sell in time, or stock items that need to make room for the next collection. Instead of storing further or discarding, more companies choose to sell surplus through auction.

### E-commerce returns

When a consumer returns an item to an e-commerce retailer, the product can still be in very good condition. It may have been opened and tested, but it may also be unopened in original packaging. Many e-commerce companies cannot return these items to their ordinary assortment and instead sell them on.

### Samples and display items

Products shown at fairs, in showrooms or as samples at retailers can be practically new. A display machine may have run only a few hours for demonstration. An office chair may have stood in a booth for three days. The function is the same as new, but the product can no longer be sold as new in a store.

### Closures and assortment changes

When stores, chains or wholesalers close, move or change assortment, existing stock must be sold. This can include everything from tools and electronics to furniture and clothing, often completely unused.

## What does this mean for you as a buyer?

Buying unused surplus at auction can give you:

**New-price quality at second-hand price.** You get a product in new condition, sometimes in unopened packaging, but at a price often significantly below ordinary retail price.

**Access to branded products.** Surplus auctions often include products from known manufacturers. Tools from Makita or Festool, kitchen equipment from established brands, office furniture from quality manufacturers.

**Opportunity to buy in lots.** If you run a business, you can sometimes buy entire lots of unused products, for example a pallet of building materials, a batch of workwear or a set of new tools.

## How do you distinguish unused from used?

On Budi, we clearly state if an object is unused. Common indicators:

- **"Unused"** or **"new"** in the title or description
- **Origin information** such as "surplus", "return", "sample" or "stock clearance"
- **Original packaging** visible in the photos
- **Segments** such as "Outlet" that collect unused products

Always read the description. It states whether the product is unused, whether the packaging is opened and whether any accessories are included.

## Common categories with unused surplus

Some categories have more unused surplus than others:

- **Tools.** Hand tools, power tools and accessories from overproduction or stock clearance.
- **Building materials.** Doors, flooring, lighting and installation materials not used in projects.
- **Clothing and shoes.** Lots from e-commerce returns or closed stores, often in original packaging.
- **Electronics.** Computers, tablets, screens and audio from returns or assortment changes.
- **Office furniture and interiors.** Display furniture, samples or furniture from office setups that did not happen.
- **Kitchen equipment.** Display kitchens, sample appliances and surplus products from commercial kitchen suppliers.

## Is it as good as buying in a store?

In most cases, yes. The product is the same. The difference is that it came to auction through another route than the store shelf. Keep in mind:

- **Warranty can vary.** Some unused products may be covered by manufacturer warranty, while others are sold under different terms. Always check what applies to the specific object.
- **Returns.** Auction purchases usually do not have the same right of return as store purchases. Read the auction terms.
- **Packaging.** Sometimes original packaging has been opened or is missing, even if the product itself is unused.

## Reuse, even when it is new

Even if the products are unused, this is still reuse. Surplus, returns and samples that are not sold through their ordinary channels risk being discarded or left unused. That is wasteful, both financially and environmentally.

By giving these products a new route to a buyer, unnecessary waste is avoided. At Budi, we see this as part of our basic philosophy: make sure things are used, not stored or thrown away. That applies whether the product is ten years old or still in unopened packaging.

## Summary

Next time you think "auction", you do not have to think "old and worn". A large part of what is sold at auction is unused: surplus, returns, samples and display goods in new condition. And even if the product is new, it is still reuse. Without a channel that handles these goods, many of them would have gone to waste.

## Budi Outlet

On Budi, the Outlet segment gathers unused products from surplus, returns and displays. Here you can find new products at auction prices in categories such as tools, building materials, interiors, electronics and clothing. Without a reuse channel, many such products risk never being used.
