How does an online auction work? Step by step

A simple guide explaining how online auctions work, from registration and bidding to payment and collection.

Online auctions have changed how we buy and sell used goods, machinery and vehicles. Instead of gathering in a physical auction room, everything happens digitally. You can bid from your computer, tablet or phone, wherever you are.

But how does it actually work? At Budi, we have handled more than 100,000 auction objects, and here we explain the process.

What is an online auction?

An online auction is a digital auction where objects are listed for sale during a fixed period. During that time, registered users can place bids. The person with the highest bid when the auction ends wins the object.

Online auctions are used today for everything from trucks and construction machinery to office furniture, restaurant equipment and building materials. Both private individuals and companies can be buyers and sellers.

Worth knowing: not everything sold at auction is used. Many auctions include completely unused products, such as surplus stock, e-commerce returns in unopened packaging and samples that have never been used. These products are also a form of reuse, because otherwise they risk being discarded.

Step 1: Create an account

The first step is to register. On Budi, you need to provide:

  • Name and contact details
  • Personal identity number or organization number
  • Payment details

On Budi, you can for example verify yourself with BankID, which makes the process fast and secure.

Step 2: Find the right object

On Budi, you can filter by category, location, price and condition. Common categories include vehicles, trucks, tools, electronics, interior and restaurant equipment.

Each object has a detail page with:

  • Photos from different angles
  • Description with technical details and condition
  • Location where the object is located
  • Auction end time
  • Current bid and bidding history

Step 3: Viewing

Many auctions offer a viewing, meaning an opportunity to inspect the object in person before the auction ends. This is especially valuable when buying vehicles, machines and other higher-value equipment. Information about viewing is shown on the object page.

Step 4: Place your bid

Bidding in an online auction is simple. You enter the amount you want to bid, and the system registers it directly. Things to keep in mind:

  • Bid increment. There is usually a minimum amount by which you can raise the bid. Bid increments normally increase as the price rises.
  • Watchlist. You can watch objects you are interested in and receive notifications when someone places a new bid.
  • Max bid. On Budi, you can use automatic bidding: enter the highest amount you are prepared to pay, and the system bids for you up to that amount. If no one else bids above your max bid, you win at the lowest possible price.

Step 5: Soft close

An important difference from traditional auctions is the so-called soft close. It works like this:

If a bid is placed during the final minutes before the auction closes, the end time is automatically extended, usually by a few minutes. The extension continues as long as new bids are placed.

This means the auction is not decided by a last-second bid. Bidding continues until everyone has had a chance to respond.

Step 6: You win - what happens next?

If you have the highest bid when the auction ends, you usually receive a confirmation by email. The confirmation includes:

  • Final price
  • Any fees, such as service fee or buyer's premium
  • Payment instructions
  • Collection information

Step 7: Payment

Payment is usually made within a few days after the auction ends. Common payment methods:

  • Card (Visa, Mastercard)
  • Swish (for private individuals, often up to a certain amount)
  • Invoice (for companies, for larger purchases)

Step 8: Collection or delivery

When payment is registered, you can collect your object. You usually need to bring:

  • Receipt or payment confirmation
  • ID or customer number
  • The right vehicle or transport solution (an office chair requires different transport than a truck)

Budi offers freight solutions and partnerships with transport providers, but in most cases the buyer is responsible for collection.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to buy at an online auction?

Yes. On Budi, bidding is transparent, accounts are verified and the terms are clear. You can see the bidding history openly, and objects are not released until payment is registered.

Can I withdraw a bid?

As a rule, a placed bid is binding, just like in a traditional auction. Read the terms carefully and only bid on objects you really want.

What happens if I do not win?

Nothing happens. You have no obligation and can continue watching other auctions and bid next time.

Summary

An online auction is a simple and transparent way to buy and sell goods, machines and vehicles. The process is digital, bidding is open, and payment is made before the item is released. The key to a good experience is to read descriptions carefully, ask questions and plan collection in advance.
